UAB hosts community engagement event Oct. 6

The institute will be held Oct. 6 in the East Meeting Hall of the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Attendees must pre-register and will not be able to register on-site. Tickets are $25 each, and registration ends Oct. 5. Registration to sponsor a student at a reduced ticket price ends Oct. 1.

UAB experts help write healthy brain guidelines

A healthy lifestyle benefits the brain as much as the rest of the body and may lessen the risk of cognitive decline (a loss of the ability to think well) as people age, according to a new advisory from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. The advisory was written by a panel of 19 medical experts convened by the AHA, including two from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. 

SOPH receives $1.5 million endowment from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama to research and develop practical solutions to health problems

The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health has received $1.5 million to establish the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama Endowed Chair in Health Economics, the School of Public Health’s first endowed chair.

An Examination of the Perceived Importance and Skills Related to Policies and Policy Making Among State Public Health Injury Prevention Staff

Dr. Martha Wingate, an associate professor in the department of health care organization and policy, and director of maternal and child health policy and leadership program, worked with a team of researchers using the Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey to assess in greater detail state injury prevention staff perceptions of policy development and related skills and their awareness and perception of “Health in All Policies” (HiAP).

Noam N. Levey receives Carole W. Samuelson Award for outstanding public health practice

Noam N. Levey, award-winning national healthcare reporter for the Los Angeles Times, is being honored by the University of Alabama at Birmingham with its 15th Annual Carole W. Samuelson Award.

UAB SOPH: An Epigenome-wide Association Study of Inflammatory Response to Fenofibrate in the Genetics of Lipid Lowering Drugs and Diet Network

The research team conducted the first epigenome-wide study of inflammatory response to daily treatment with 160 mg of micronized fenofibrate over a 3-week period in the Genetics of Lipid Lowering Drugs and Diet Network (GOLDN, n = 750).
