(PhD/MPH) Coordinated PhD Industrial and Systems Engineering (Auburn University School of Engineering) / Master of Public Health Program 2016-17

Catalog 2016-2017

Program Description

This coordinated degree program is offered through the Auburn University School of Engineering and the UAB School of Public Health. Students focus their MPH in Environmental Health Science.

The UAB School of Public Health has partnered with the Auburn School of Engineering's Industrial and Systems Engineering program to provide the opportunity for students in the Auburn University Environmental Engineering Doctoral Program to pursue public health education during their training in engineering in a flexible format that accommodates their academic schedule while assuring critical instruction in the core areas of public health and in specific competency areas considered essential to environmental engineers with public health training.

Program Requirements

Students must complete the MPH Core plus 10 credit hours of MPH focus courses for a total of 30 credit hours in addition to the required PhD curriculum requirements. Twelve credit hours from the PhD curriculum are credited toward the MPH degree for a total of 42 MPH credit hours. Students may complete the MPH degree program totally online, in class, or through a mix of online and in class experiences. Out-of state online students pay the same tuition rate as Alabama residents.

Program Admission Requirements

Students must be admitted to the Auburn University Industrial and Systems Engineering doctoral program before being considered for the PhD/MPH. Once a student has obtained admission to the engineering school, we will consider them to have met our basic admission criteria. Some students may elect to apply to both programs at the same time, others after they have matriculated to the School of Engineering. In either case, we will ask students to have Auburn University forward their application packet to us. Applicants will be reviewed by the Academic Dean within the existing guidelines provided by the Admissions and Graduation Committee and according to the above procedures. The Academic Dean, in consultation with the Department Chairs, will assign an academic advisor based on the applicant’s stated primary area(s) of interest. The assignment of an advisor will also dictate the applicant’s departmental home.

Upon acceptance to the PhD program, students are automatically accepted to the MPH degree program.

Application Process

Students must apply separately to each program. To apply to the Auburn University Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, please follow this link for instructions: http://eng.auburn.edu/future-students/graduate.
